History

The idea for a technology outreach (tech-reach) program
stemmed from the Vision 2020 capital and endowment campaign, which is
responsible for the creation of the Schaeper Center. The outreach
program was created to utilize these new facilities, and to fulfill the
school's goal of community leadership, which was part of the original
vision.
In the summer of 2003, construction was completed and, under the leadership
of Mr. Jerry Hamburg, the first tech-reach classes officially began with a
summer camp for
Carson School and
GEAR UP students.
Sponsored by Elder and Seton High Schools, tech-reach is an independently
funded organization housed in Elder's Schaeper Center.. The grant money provides special programming and operating expenses, but also
scholarships which over 80% of our
students depend upon for their enrollment. Each year, tech-reach offers a schedule
of adult computer classes in addition to children's classes, customized
staff training classes, and other
special programming.
In the summer of 2004, tech-reach partnered with
Dunham Recreation
Center for a summer camp. The following fall, tech-reach partnered with
The Women's Connection to
begin an after school math tutoring program for local elementary school
students called Math Discovery.
In the summer of 2005,
tech-reach partnered with the
YMCA's Child Development
Services to begin an enrichment program for local elementary school students
called Film Troopers, while also housing a
summer camp for a return visit from
GEAR UP.
The spring of 2006 continued with a
schedule of
evening classes for adults, and summer camp will be with the
Alcoholism
Council of Cincinnati as well as a Computer Keyboarding Camp for
St. Teresa of Avila and
St. William schools.
Since the first tech-reach class, over 1445 students have benefited from over
220 classes to date.
